Why men lie to women

Posted on December 11, 2007 in Marriage

Lying to anyone is bad. We all know that. Still, several people lie. Lying to your spouse has always stood in the way of a sound marital relationship. It most cases, it is observed that it is the man who lies to the woman. Why does this happen? What is the psychology behind such lies? If we undermine the reasons behind this, we find many stark facts.

To a certain extent, it is believed that the wife herself is the cause for her man’s bluffing with her. Men generally complain about their wives’ nagging and thus seem to decide that it is better off to lie. Very often, a woman tends to compare her man with her neighbour’s and expects too much of him. Naturally, the man’s ego shows up and he wants to please his wife so that she stops wishing she had never married him. The only safe way is to lie.

This however is not to say that the woman is always at fault. Sometimes, it depends upon the attitude of the man and even on what he thinks of himself. It is shameful to say this, but many men suffer from a lack of self esteem which makes them lie. They constantly feel that that their wives are dissatisfied with them and that they are not able to give their wives much. Misunderstanding in relationships gives way to lack of trust, since the husband finds it difficult to share his problems with his wife.

Many a time, it is the man’s ego that has stood as an obstacle in the way of sharing his problems and limitations to her. Some men feel that simply since he is a man, he is not expected to admit failures and weak points. Their women believe them to be strong at heart. Secondly, men are usually too pleased to have received a compliment from their women. Another major reason for men lying is the fear of break up. Most men foolishly think that speaking out their emotional problems will invite trouble. They do not realize the fact that sharing emotions ease marital relationship and build trust. However, if a man is guilty of cheating his wife, he cannot but lie to cover up his wrong doing.

This is not the whole story after all. If a wife is suspicious of her innocent husband, he will feel suffocated and shall find himself unable to tell her even about an official trip with his female personal assistant or boss. In the end, when she finds out the truth, he will really be in a position where he is unable to defend himself. Yet another instance of man lying to woman is when he is drunk. He says, “see honey, I am not drunk at all”. Here, it happens because of his inability to get rid of drinking coupled with the wife’s refusal to get used to this habit.

Men not only lie to their wives, but to their female bosses as well. They exaggerate about how hard a time they have at home with their wives. Again, this is for their own benefit and sympathy from bosses.
