An Intrauterine Device or IUD is one of the methods of contraception. A device is placed in the uterus through cervix. A tiny string hangs down the upper part of the vagina which one can’t notice during the intercourse. IUD may lasts from 1 to 10 years. They are 99 percent effective contraception. It alters the movement of the sperm and egg, thereby, arresting the fertilization. However, IUDs do not protect you against STDs and AIDS.
IUD problems women might face
IUDs are relatively safe method of birth control, however, some women might face certain IUD problems like:
- Perforation: In rare cases (1 in 1,000) IUD will puncture or perforate the uterus. This happens during the insertion. In such a case, the IUD should be removed.
- Menstrual Problems: Around 12% women face the problem of heavy bleeding or cramps after the insertion of IUD. Some might even experience spotting between the periods. However, these IUD problems will reduce eventually.
- Expulsion: Sometimes (2% to 10%) IUDs are expelled out from the uterus into vagina. This happens during the first few months of insertion. It is common when the insertion is right after the delivery or in women who have never carried pregnancy.
- IUDs may cause benign growths known as ovarian cysts.
- Side effects like mood swings, headaches, acne, breast tenderness are also noted-IUD problems faced by women.
When to consult a doctor when facing an IUD problem?
You should schedule an appointment with your doctor, if you experience:
- Delay in periods after the insertion of IUD.
- Missed a period.
- Abnormal spotting or severe bleeding.
- High fever.
- IUD string is missing.
- Abnormal vaginal discharge.
- Abdominal pain or cramp while sexual intercourse.
Your doctor will rectify the IUD problems by treatment.
