Fashion in the Victorian Era corresponds to the British culture which was prevalent during the reign of Queen Victoria. The era of Victoria lasted from June 1837 to January 1901.
This period lasted for nearly 63 years and had seen massive fashion changes. The change in machinery and material changed the clothing and its styles completely in this era. Ball gowns, coats, frills, flounces, lace and ribbons were the main features of this era.
Fashion Of Victorian era At A Glance:
The fashion in Victorian age can be divided into periods and studied. Special features of various periods are described below:
- Fashion That Was Prevalent From 1825-1840: This era had seen the transition in the women. They were gaining the freedom of speech and also the freedom to educate them and become independent. Their dressing styles also changed as the part of this revolution. Normal waistline dresses came into the fashion. Few garments with separate jacket bodices and skirts were also introduced. Now, the top was separated from the skirt. Muslin was the fabric of this era. But as the time passed the cloth was trimmed and use of laces and other decorative items came into fashion. By the end of the 18th century other fabrics like silk and heavy cotton also came into fashion. Puff sleeves up to the elbow and high collars were another feature of this era.
- Fashion That Was Prevalent From 1885- 1860: In this era which was mid of the 19th century women were seen as an idol of grace and elegance. Long gowns made from silk, which were lavishly trimmed with laces, frills, ribbons etc were in the fashion. These dresses had sloping shoulders, wide pagoda sleeves. The skirt was three yards around. But the whole look of the dress gave an elegant graceful appearance to the lady who wore them. Women used to wear soft kid side – laced shoes outside, but when they were indoors they use to wear heeled flat shoes or slippers. Separate under sleeves usually decorated with laces or borders were used. Large shawls of cashmere or black lace mantillas were usually cut to accommodate the wide skirts. This was done as they were in fashion.
