Breast lump is defined as the growth of tissues which develops within your breast. The part of breast lump will be distinct from the entire breast and will have definite border or it will be an area of thickened tissues.
Many types of changes can be noticed in the breast having a breast lump such as skin redness, distension, dimpling or pitting, breast asymmetry, breast pain, nipple inversion, or unusual nipple discharge.
Sometimes breast lumps can result in breast cancer. But most of the times they result from non cancerous conditions. So, consultation from the doctor is of utmost important incase you notice any lump in your breast.
Types Of Breast Lumps:
Breast lumps are formed mostly to the women who are in the age group of 30 – 50 years. There are many types of breast lumps. Some of them are:
- Cysts: Most of the breast lumps are in the form of cysts. These are fluid filled sacs which are formed due to dilated ducts found in the breast. Cysts are smooth and can be in round or oval shape. They move slightly on pressing. Those women who are in their Perimenopause stage will detect these cysts which are tender and hard to touch. Cysts normally appear before the menstrual period and will be resolve once the menstrual period is over. It is very difficult to examine them in the clinical examinations. If the cyst goes away and do not reappear again then it is cured but if reappears after every 5-6 weeks then it requires surgery to cure it.
- Fibroadenomas: These types of breast lumps are firm, round and rubbery mass that are formed due to the excessive growth of glandular and connective tissues. They can grow up to the size of a plum and are painless structures. Whenever you will press this structure it will move slightly or bounce back. These structures may appear during pregnancy and will be removed once pregnancy is over.
- Breast Infection: This kind of infection is the result of bacteria. It enters the breast tissue during the breast feeding. Thickened skin is the common symptom that will be noticed. Consumption of antibiotic can be helpful in its treatment.
