What is an Ovarian Cyst?
Fluid-filled sacs within or on ovaries are known as the ovarian cysts. While majority of the ovarian cysts are noncancerous, some cysts can be cancerous. Others can cause menstrual irregularities, abdominal pain or bleeding also.
Causes of Ovarian Cysts
There are many causes of ovarian cysts. Among these, three causes are as under:
- Follicular Cyst: These are the most common type of ovarian cysts. Each month in a normal menstrual cycle, ovaries develop sac-like structure called follicle to hold and egg. Follicles are important for the production of pregnancy hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. When a follicle continues to grow for an abnormal period during a menstrual cycle without releasing the egg, ovarian cysts are formed.
- Corpus Luteum Cyst: Such cysts are formed after the release of egg from its follicle, now known as corpus luteum. If conception does not happen, the corpus luteum can usually break down on its own or become filled with fluid or blood, thus forming cysts.
- Endometrioid Cyst or Endometrioma: Women suffering from endometriosis may develop this kind of cyst. Endometrioma cyst is caused when the tissues that form the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium) get attached to the ovaries. These cysts can cause severe pain.
