Menopause is a natural biological process that brings about cessation of menstruation or fertility in women. This happens when supply of eggs in ovaries become steadily less. As a result, there is fluctuation in hormonal (estrogen and progesterone) level. This is accompanied with a lot of side effects in the body. Technically, a woman enters menopause when she has not had period for 12 months consecutively.
At What Age Does Menopause Arrive?
The occurrence of menopause varies from woman to woman. Though, the average age is between 50 to 51 years, some women enter menopause as early as 35 years and some as late as 60 years.
What Causes Menopause?
Every girl is born with fixed number of eggs in her ovaries. Apart from storing eggs, ovaries are also responsible for secreting estrogen and progesterone hormone. These hormones are responsible for regulating ovulation and menstruation. Menopause happens when the number of eggs in the ovaries becomes so dwindled that no amount of stimulation from estrogen and progesterone can make them functional again.
Apart from this normal process, surgical intervention (hysterectomy) or damage caused to the ovaries (chemotherapy) can also cause menopause.
