We often feel low. Things get to us. Either we are fed up with ourselves or life. The question that arises in our mind is : Am I depressed ?
Being unhappy is different from depression. Unhappiness is a momentary feeling but depression can be deep seated and last for a longer time. The latter requires clinical intervention and medical treatment. One should not neglect depression. But how does one answer the question: Am I depressed?
Am I Depressed if :
- One finds it difficult to carry on with daily chores.
- Crying is quite frequent.
- Morbidity sets in and one feels life is a drudgery.
- One takes less interest in life.
- Socializing is less, rather nil. One prefers to keep to himself or herself.
- Suicidal tendencies develop.
- One does not feel like dressing up.
- Change in dietary habits. One avoids food. In some cases, one eats more as he or she feels hungry or eats out of sheer lonliness.
- No interest in hobbies like sports, watching television or reading a book.
- Irritability.
- Lethargy sets in. One is slow at one’s work.
- Less motivation.
- Unrealistic view about life and situations. Everything appears bleak.
- One does not react normally to situations.
- Reflexes are slow.
- One cannot control one’s negative thoughts.
- A feeling of worthlessness and helplessness sets in.
- Even a small task appears to be difficult to be performed.
- Poor concentration.
- Sleep disturbances. One tends to sleep less or sometimes tend to lie down for a longer period of time.
Do you have any of these symptoms? It is easy now for you to answer the question am I depressed? Consult your physician and take the necessary action. You can come out of your depression with determination and will power to get well.
