Women do take alcohol while socializing, but at times they take more of it to escape loneliness and boredom. Heavy drinkers among them are addicted to alcohol and cannot do without it. They often take it at the expense of their health.

Depressed women often take alcohol as a relief from pain and misery. Even while on treatment for depression, they continue to consume it. Those who are on antidepressants can face health risks if they take alcohol. Why so? Let us understand why alcohol and antidepressants do not gel.

Why a Combination of Alcohol and Antidepressants is health hazardous?

Alcohol can increase the sedative effects of certain antidepressants.
Tyramine, a substance found in beer and wine can mix with MAOIs (Monoamine oxidase inhibitors), resulting in increase in blood pressure.
Medication may not be effective in treating depression.
The side-effects of the medication can become worse.
Certain types of antidepressants cause drowsiness. Both, when mixed, can cause sleepiness.
Social drinking can also can impair thinking and reactions.
Alcohol can cause dehydration and raise the blood lithium levels, thus becoming toxic, resulting in lithium poisoning.
Affects your performance in activities such as operating machinery or driving a car.
One can also become unconscious.
Can cause disorders, which in turn result in death.

It is better to avoid alcohol, while on anti-depressants. Consuming both together can prove to be fatal. Consult your doctor about taking beverages and any kind of foods while on depression medicines.
