Why are women paid less than men at equal jobs? This is a question that is often raised by feminists and social activists, who believe in equal rights for women. In earlier days, women were less educated and had less exposure and so were denied many opportunities in the work arena. Even while holding the same responsibilities as men, they were paid less. But why now in the present days?
Women are paid less than men at equal jobs – Why so?
- Employers feel that women leave work in order to bring up children. They prefer not to invest on them.
- The productivity of women goes down after delivery of children.
- Women cannot tackle high brow- issues, which are considered to be the prerogative of men.
- Another theory making the rounds is women choose low paid jobs as they do not like to take on work that makes a whole lot of money, like bank managers etc. They prefer the job of a cashier.
- Women cannot negotiate as well as men.
- In terms of physical strength, they are considered to be weaker.
- Women are less ambitious as compared to men.
- Employers feel that women cannot compete with men.
- Women are considered to be less educated than women.
- Feminists claim that men benefit by keeping women oppressed.
- Overall male superiority as being the bread earner.
- Women tend to go in for jobs, which enable them to handle both work and job. In other jobs, they have less range of jobs to choose from. They make compromises with their career due to children and taking care of home.
Women all over the word are discriminated against by employers and are paid less. Most women work as hard as men, but yet employers feel that their contribution towards productivity would be less as compared to men. In developed countries much has been achieved in terms of a higher pay packet, but in less developed countries the situation is precarious.
