Jane Goodall ,well-known environmentalist and primatologist was appointed Messenger of Peace to the United Nations in 2002 by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. This was in honor of her belief and dedication to conservation and sustainable development.
Honoring the scientist for her sustained efforts in promotion of human rights and liberation of the human spirit, Kofi Annan presented her with a plaque consisting of a citation appreciating the work done by the scientist in human development.
Dr. Goodall was born in London, England on April 3rd, 1934. Her career in environmental studies began in 1960 at Lake Tanganyika in East Africa, to observe the chimpanzee population. This attained her the distinction of being the foremost authority on chimpanzee. She received her PH.D degree from Cambridge in1965. She set up the Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation to undertake research on wild chimpanzees.
Chimpanzees, according to Dr. Goodall, are highly intelligent and emotional animals, forming complex social groups. She has written many books on chimapanzees and received innumerable international awards.
