Women are discriminated against worldwide according to a report commissioned by the United Nations. This is happening despite pledges made by 185 member states of UN to outlaw laws that favored men by 2005. Judging by statistics 70% of the women are poor and they own only 1 % of titled land.
The report, prepared for UN Human Rights Commissioner Louise Arbour states that rape that took place within a marriage has not been declared as a crime in about 53 countries. It was complied by Prof. Fareda Banda who focused on other laws that discriminated against women, which include statutes on divorce, pensions and maternity benefits.
She also said that the legal age for marriage could also have tremendous impact on the lives of women. In many states many young women had a different age for marriage as compared to young men. The age was lower in the case of girls when compared to that of boys. This affects her life in many ways, for example, she may have to leave school at 14 to get married. She has to often give up her education and bear children early, which in turn affects her health in a negative way.
Efforts should be on to introduce separate and new laws to end discrimination as the existing international as well as UN laws need to be upheld, says the report.
