Women after marriage take on their husband’s name. It is customary to do so. Feminists would argue otherwise though. Yet, for centuries, women changed their maiden surname to that of their husbands. Why so you may ask?
Reasons for Husband’s Name
- It is easier when one has children. If one were traveling with them, one need not worry about their names in travel documents. Even while admitting them in schools, it is more convenient to have the father’s name.
- The feeling that one belongs to one family. Many brides prefer to identify with their husband’s family. They feel they belong to that family now. They prefer being called by the husband’s name
- It is the accepted social norm. Most people after marriage call them Mrs. Jones or Mrs. Smith, using their husband’s surname. It is internationally also practiced and makes it easier if one were to reside in another country
- One can identify better with one’s husband. It indicates proximity towards him and accepting him. After all, marriage means the union of two individuals and accepting each other wholeheartedly. Making an issue of a surname could be in bad taste
- One would like a change in name. It makes you feel different. It indicates the beginning of a new life
A bride likes to feel she belongs to her husband. She prefers to take on his family name to feel closer to him. Identifying herself with her husband would mean accepting him in every respect. Making an issue of the change in name might create barriers between them.
