Luecorrhea, a disease of the genital tract of women, refers to the white discharge from the vagina. It can be a smooth discharge or sticky and lumpy. It varies as age advances or if the woman travels a lot. To a certain extent it is a normal and healthy discharge. It is a fluid form of dead and worn out cells in the vaginal tract, as well as toxic elements that are got rid off from the vagina. In healthy woman, the discharge is whitish in nature, but if it becomes dark in color, then it needs medical attention.
Luecorrhea needs to be treated if the discharge is very heavy and cannot be stopped with sanitary pads. Treatment is also essential in case discharge is not pure-white, but is grey-white, green or yellow, rusty or brown and , if there is itching sensation in the vagina after the discharge.
Symptoms of Leucorrhea
- The discharge can be dark in color, like yellow, green or brown
- A profusely white discharge
- Itchy sensation during discharge or abdomen pain
- In cases that are severe and not treated properly, the discharge may begin from the anal region
Causes of Leucorrhea
- Fungal infection- A yeast like fungus can cause infection of the vaginal tract, causing leucorrhea. If infected by the fungus the discharge is white and thick and one feels itchy. Such a discharge is known as vaginal thrush
- Unhygienic toilet habits- Sharing of toilets, particularly public toilets can infect the vagina, causing leucorrhea. This can also be due to forgetting the removal of a diaphragm or tampon. Women who take a lot of vaginal medications also suffer from leucorrhea
- Sexually transmitted diseases- Leucorrhea can also be caused due to certain sexually transmitted diseases. Popular among these diseases is trichomoniasis. Such discharges are yellow or greenish in color
- Cervical problems- Problems with the cervix, such as cervical polyp, can cause leucorrhea. Inflammation of the pelvis occurs due to infection
- Stress and tension- Women who have to cope with undue stress and tension suffer from leucorrhea. To some extent, luecorrhea can be psychosomatic
- Diseases- Diseases such as anemia or tuberculosis may result in heavy discharge from the vagina
Types of Leucorrhea
- Infectious Leucorrhea- This is infected by a fungus and causes a white and thick discharge and one experiences an itchy sensation
- Cervical Leucorrhea- This results in the formation or erosion of a polyp in the cervix. It results in a rusty or brown discharge similar to blood
- Sexually Transmitted Leucorrhea- One suffers from a common sexually transmitted disease such as trichomoniasis and has a greenish or yellowish discharge.
- Pelvic Leucorrhea- This causes complications in the pelvic, causing infectious pelvic inflammatory disease. The discharge is white accompanied with pain in the lumbar area
- Stress related luecorrhea- Tensions and stress also causes leucorrhea. It results in a heavy whitish discharge
Prevention of Leucorrhea
- Genital hygiene should be maintained. After every bath, the genital should be washed
- One should drink plenty of water
- If one gets drenched in the rain, one should change one’s clothes immediately, even the under clothes
- One should avoid using nylon underclothes. Cotton is better as one sweats during the summer
- One should be careful about cleaning the anal area after defecation
- One should be sure that the partner is free from infections before having sexual intercourse
- If your are masturbating then be sure that fingers are clean
- Do not use any cosmetics and powders in the genital area
- Exercise to keep the body stress free
Women do have to cope with problems concerning vaginal discharge. Maintaining proper hygiene of the genitals will prevent the occurrence of Lucorrhea. Yet, if the problem occurs, it is advisable to consult the physician.
