Unwanted pregnancy is often not welcome. Couples may not want to be parents, or a woman may give priority to her career than having a child. Aborting the child is the option. Yet, abortion is not that easy as it sounds. It does affect the woman’s health. What health issues does it involve? How are women affected?
How Does Abortion Affect Women’s Health?
- The cervix is damaged. Permanent weakening of the cervix occurs. It becomes difficult to carry the weight of the next pregnancy
- Development of secondary infertility is possible. The chances of remaining permanently childless is possible
- Some women will become sterile
- Women, who abort are at a higher risk of death as compared to those who have a child
- Many women who abort suffer from depression, which can affect the overall health
- The chances of mental health treatment may be required in the case of those women who go in for an abortion, then in the case of women who bear a child. Abortion is linked up with neurotic depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenic disorders and adjustment reactions
- There is a link between breast cancer and oral contraceptives
- Abortions can cause cancer of the reproductive systems as well as rectal cancer
- Women can experience genital tract infection, which can include pelvic inflammatory disease
- They can lead to future miscarriages. Placenta previa and uterine perforations caused due to abortions have negative impact on the woman’s health as well the newborn
- Incomplete abortion would mean that certain parts of the fetus remain inside the uterus. This could lead to serious complications
- A woman often experiences guilt, depression, anxiety after abortions
- Some women are prone to suicide after an abortion
- Some internal organs surrounding the uterus may get damaged
- There are chances of permanent scars being left on the uterus lining
Women need to be sure whether they want to go in for an abortion or not. After all, the side-effects of an abortion can affect their health in many ways. Abortion may appear very easy, but it is a health hazard no doubt.
