Can a Woman Propose?

Posted on March 10, 2008 in Latest News

Tradition lays down the rule that a man should propose. Generally, a woman expects the man to propose and waits anxiously or rather keenly for him to do so. But what happens if a woman proposes? It may not be conventional, but there are women who decide to turn the tables and propose to their man. They are generally very bold and courageous and do not believe in conforming to the traditional approach of allowing the man to do the needful.

Most women prefer their man to propose, as then they are sure that he is ready for marriage. If a woman proposes then she may get a “no” as an answer, and that may be very disappointing. Also a man may not like being proposed to by the woman. Most men are also tradition bound and prefer the woman to propose. Under these circumstances, is it alright for a woman to propose?

Should a Woman Propose?

It is, no doubt, not the normal practice for a woman to propose. Yet some women prefer to take the initiative and propose marriage to their man. They question the traditional approach and prefer to take the decision on their own. This does place them at a risk, as the man may not agree to the proposal. In fact, he may not appreciate her unconventional approach. The woman has to be very sure of herself before doing so.

    I have two responses:

    1) This article is using definite statements, like “Men do get embarrassed if a woman proposes.” This does not necessarily apply to all men.

    2) A woman should probably know her man well enough to know whether these statements apply to their situation. If the couple doesn’t know each other that well, they probably have no business getting married in the first place.
