Post-menopausal women are at a risk of heart attack or stroke if too much calcium supplements are taken. Normally, women around 55 years and above are recommended to take more calcium as they tend to suffer from osteoporosis, weakening of the bones. But researchers, in the British Medical Journal hold the view that calcium can increase the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
High doses of calcium supplements can adversely affect the vascular health. They can outweigh any advantages of calcium intake. Calcium, no doubt, is good for the bones, but for older women, as it has been observed, it has certain disadvantages too. Calcium is prescribed to post- menopausal women for improving their bone condition. Now with these findings, older women have to be more cautious about taking calcium supplements.

Calcium supplements are bad for the heart among older women. Of course, one has to consult one’s physician, as there are benefits too. Older women require calcium for improving their bones.
