For many women, menstruation is a messy affair what with frequent changing and those cramps and tiredness. For some, abdominal cramps are so intense it affects routine work. Here are some effective ways to combat menstrual pain so that women can stay healthy and fit 30 days a month!
- A main cause of pain might be a wrong diet or lack of nutrition, so it is important to pay ample attention to what you consume. Reduce your consumption of salt, sugar and caffeine during the week before your period to prevent cramps or reduce their severity. Also increase your intake of calcium-rich foods such as milk, yogurt or leafy green vegetables.
- Herbal remedies such as Viburnum prunifolium, Scutellaria spp., and Cimicifuga raemosa have an antispasmodic effect that may reduce some menstrual cramps.
- A high-potency B-complex vitamin may help if you’re susceptible to menstrual cramps. Vitamin B 6 is especially important, but don’t take more than 100mg per day.
- Regular exercise such as walking helps to prevent or at least reduce the severity of menstrual cramps for some women. Sitting or lying around may actually make you feel worse. Swimming and walking are good activities because they are gentle and not too stressful. Certain stretches and yoga positions will also help to relieve the pain.
- Massaging might work well for most women. With your hands over your naval, begin making small circles in a clockwise direction. This should be done slowly with moderate pressure for about a minute, and then gradually increase the size of the circling until you are rubbing the entire abdomen.
- Warm water massage is another technique women could use to relieve pain. Warm some water and dip a towel into it. Lie down and massage gently on the abdomen and on the small of your back.

For getting rid of really bad cramps I take a pamprin (like midol but better.) Also everyone has heard of using a heating pad of some kind. One you may not have heard though is yoga. There different positions that can help relieve pain. I stumbled upon one myself on accident.
Get on all fours (on your bed or the floor. the later is best) and then put your head down. You can rest your head on the floor itself or use a pillow. You can move your arms into a more comfortable position if you want. Basically you’re sticking your butt in the air. It looks silly, you may feel goofy at first, but believe me if you’re in enough pain you’ll try anything. And after a few minutes you’ll be glad you tryed this.
Obviously this one is for at home. I use it to relieve pain until my pamprin kicks in. Then I’m good as new!
