Menopause is the time when a woman stops ovulating. During this stage, her monthly period (menstrual cycle) ceases. Even there is decrease in the levels of estrogen and progesterone- the two most important hormones in her body. Her life undergoes a transition from the reproductive to the non-reproductive stage.

Natural menopause occurs between the ages of 45 and 55 years with the average age around 50 years worldwide. Nevertheless, about one per cent of women experience menopause before the age of 40 years. This is known as premature menopause or premature ovarian failure (POF). But now-a-days women are reaching menopause as early as at the age of 30 years, which is an alarming trend.

There is no treatment available to make the ovaries start working again. However, health experts advise to use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to reduce the health risks associated with the early onset of menopause. Moreover, psychological counseling and support groups may help the woman come to terms with her experience.
