Women have varied roles to play in the society. For the same reason, she is likely to face many setbacks too. Surviving each such hurdle is of utmost importance to women in particular considering the seriousness of her responsibilities she has at home and at work place.
Moreover, it could not be concluded yet that it is an equal society these days. The world outside is still very much male dominated. This gender discrimination and the habitual cornering of women are additional pressure that the female members of the society have to put up with.
Mental disorders
Prevalence rates of depression and anxiety disorders as well as psychological distress are higher for women than for men. These findings are consistent across a range of studies undertaken in different countries and settings.
In addition to the higher rates of depression and anxiety, women are much more likely to receive a diagnosis of obsessive compulsive disorder, somatization disorder and panic disorder. In contrast men are more likely to receive a diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder and alcohol abuse/dependency.
What could be done?
The government and other women’s health organizations could come forward with schemes to provide basic education and employment to all women who are not only financially backward, but also to those emotionally weak and devoid of moral support from family or the society. This will be a forward measure towards protecting the mental health of women since a vast majority of mental distraught happens in women owing to their financial instability. When women are self-reliant, they become more confident to face the world. Another important step towards ensuring women’s mental well-being is to educate them regarding social evils against them and urge them not to keep quiet any more.
