As a long-time coach and reporter for open water swimming and marathon swimming (anything over 10 kilometers), I have seen first-hand women of all ages compete successfully against men at all levels, from age-group to world-class. Professional marathon swimming is one of the few sports where men and women start races together and compete head-to-head. There is a world-wide circuit that takes swimmers from Hong Kong to London on 5 continents.
